My cover story for Washingtonian<\/mark><\/a> <\/strong><\/em>looked at the rapidly rising cost of living in the nation’s capital. Housing, day care, and even groceries seem to be more expensive in the Washington area than in most other parts of the country. So how are individuals and families at different income levels in different parts of town making it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jake Shimabukuro<\/mark><\/strong><\/a> has made a child’s toy into a respected musical instrument.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Met<\/strong><\/mark><\/em> was Dallas-Fort Worth\u2019s arts, entertainment, and culture weekly that I helped found during the all-too-brief heyday of alt-weeklies. I served as editor-in-chief, and also wrote stories on things like strippers-turned-authors and the legacy of the TV show Dallas<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then, twenty-one years after The Met<\/em> was launched, a team of editors, designers, writers, and salespeople got together on a volunteer, not-for-profit basis to produce a new issue of the defunct publication that celebrated The Met\u2019<\/em>s 21st birthday with guest stars The Old 97’s. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
